The operating method according to the invention and the apparatus according to the invention for the transfer of individual bobbins (9) or bobbin groups (9,9) from a winding machine or a assembling or spinning machine to a bobbin-transport device (4), on the one hand, and of empty bobbin tubes (6) from the transport device (4) to the winding machine or the assembling or spinning machine, on the other hand, are characterised in that use is made of a cyclically working apparatus having a rotating endless transport member (12) for bobbin carriers (5) which are movable to and fro between vertically and horizontally oriented positions, the apparatus having in parallel with the transport member (12) a guide rail (14) which is stationary relative to the latter and on which are guided slides (15) carrying the bobbin carriers (15.1) and coupleable to the transport member, the guide rail having at least one rail portion (14.1, 14.2) adjustable relative to the remaining part of the guide rail, so that the bobbin and tube transport between the winding machine or the assembling or spinning machine and the bobbin-transport device can take place in a closed circuit.
