The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a polyethylene phthalate or a polyethylene naphthalate having a predetermined intrinsic viscosity, comprising the direct esterification of a phthalic acid or a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid using ethylene glycol, followed by polycondensation of the esterification product, using a polycondensation catalyst system comprising components containing cobalt, manganese and antimony.
