The invention relates to a support for the building industry for the vertical support of a ceiling formwork from below. The support has a vertically adjustable pile- or rod-shaped main body and, for this purpose, possesses an inner part (8b) and an outer part (9b) fitted one inside the other so as to be displaceable in the longitudinal direction and capable of being fixed in different relative positions in order to adjust the support height. For coarse adjustment, a toothed wheel (12b, 13b) is arranged on the outer part (9), on at least one side, so as to be rotatable about an axis at right angles to the longitudinal direction, which toothed wheel is assigned, on the inner part (8b), a tooth-engaging face which extends in the longitudinal direction and is adjacent to the toothed-wheel side of the outer part (9b). The outer part (9b) has, on the toothed-wheel side, a longitudinal recess through which the teeth (21b) of the toothed wheel (12b, 13b) engage with the tooth-engaging face. A bar (25b, 26b) is present, which automatically allows rotation of the toothed wheel (12b, 13b) during extension of the inner part (8b), but blocks retraction, and which can be manually moved from its blocking position to a releasing position. For fine adjustment, the coarse-adjusting device is arranged on the outer part (9b) so as to be loosely displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the support and is supported on a stop sleeve (44b) capable of being screwed to the outer part (9b).
