The invention relates to a process for the mechanical stacking of grid mats emerging from a grid welding machine, with the mats being inverted alternately, in which process a mat is delivered on lateral supporting surfaces, seized above the stacking station by holding elements of a cross-member which can be turned about its longitudinal axis, lifted up, inverted, lowered again and laid down on a non-inverted mat. To make it possible to stack two mats (1, 1a) which emerge from the grid welding machine on adjacent paths, said mats are guided onto outer supporting surfaces (2, 2a) and inner supporting surfaces (3, 3a and 10, 10a) assigned to a cross-member, and the mat on the one path is seized by holding elements (7, 7a) on the cross-member, and inverted by a rotary movement of the cross-member and laid down on a stacking station (8, 9) underneath the supporting surfaces for the mat on the other path, and, beforehand, the mat which is not to be inverted is caused with the rotary movement of the cross-member and simultaneous release by the outer supporting surface to be laid down on the same stacking station.
