The invention relates to a method for determining the utilisation time on direct data links according to the method of envelope-comparable frame analysis, in which, by means of a sensor, a recording grid is laid over the data stream flowing to or from a data terminal device and a predefined number of consecutive bit groups are measured and compared with one another, and a sensor to carry out the method. According to the invention, the data stream signal bits are measured and the recording grid is then synchronised with the data stream when a first bit is measured which is identical to the corresponding bit of the preceding signal. A counter then runs forward only during the phase in which the bits are identical. When a bit is measured which is not identical to the corresponding bit of the preceding signal, the recording grid is resynchronised.
