A laser beam is used to detect the quality of a hypothetical shot at a target (2) where a tone generator (13,14) is provided to produce a shot quality signal. The tone generator (13,14) stores several pulse trains corresp. to different situations and a selector circuit (11) for activating the relevant sequence. A computer (15) may electronically producing the sequences. The tone generator may be developed to produce different types of pulse trains which correspond to different shots and may be adapted to special properties of the target. ADVANTAGE - Optimum response to actual shot conditions.
