The hot starting system allows the fuel injection quantity to be adjusted in resoonse to a hot starting condition identified from the detected temp. of the engine cooling water and air intake temp. within a given interval after starting the engine each of which is compared with a respective threshold value. The identified condition is stored after the engine is switched off to allow the hot starting procedure to be employed when the engine is re-started as long as the engine cooling water is still above a second threshold value. Pref. the stored condition is erased after a given elapsed time or when the engine has performed a given number of rotations from starting.
