Fuel element basin repair - by layer removing tool on frame with guide element on basin wall

When a water-filled nuclear fuel element basin wall has deposits which have to be removed. A frame with a vertical guide element is attached to the wall by suction cups. A tool on a carriage is drawn along this guide element. A suction system extracts the cuttings without contaminating the basin. Suction cups (13) hold a frame (1) on the wall (3) of the basin (5) on which a layer (9) has to be removed under water (7). The structure (11) has a guide element (15) e.g. a feed spindle, and a gear motor (19, 21). A carriage (17) on the spindle carries a motorised tool (23) such as a spatula, milling cutter or a hydroelectrical chisel, complete with drive (25). A suction hood (27) is joined by a hose (28) to an exhauster (29). ADVANTAGE - The appts. prevents radiation hazards for the personnel and removes deposits or a lining prior to replacement, even under water.
