Foot-operated switches (12-14) are arranged in a row (111) near an edge (110) of the platform (11), and wired (120,130,140) to a decoder (16) associated with two shift registers (19,20) and an adjuster time switch (40).$ The decoder (16) is programmable e.g. using EPROM, EEPROM, ROM, PLA or GAL.$ The operator first places one foot on the 'Lower' switch (12) and the other on the 'Raise' switch (14). To instigate movement in a chosen direction, the corresp. foot is kept on the appropriate switch (12 or 14) while the other foot is transferred from the opposite switch (14 or 12) to the central one (13).$ ADVANTAGE - Safe operation can be learnt easily and quickly by persons unfamiliar with appts.
