A heat-storage method using a specified metalloorganic Al halide complex salt is claimed as is also a method for prepg. the complex salt. In the heat-storage method an excess of low temp. heat, e.g. obtd. as heat loss in various technical processes, is used to melt a metalloorganic Al halide complex salt of formula (I). The melt functions as a heat reservoir and the heat is set free by crystallisation. In (I), k = 0 or 1; p and n = 1, 2 or 3; M = alkali or 1/2 alkaline earth metal atom; R = alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or another monovalent org. residue; and X = (pseudo) halogen or 1/2 sulphate anion. Prepn. of (I) is by (i) reacting an org. halide RX with Al to form a sesquichloride R2AlX-RA1X2 (II); (ii) reacting (II) with an ether R2O to form a mixt. of halides R2A1X and RX2AlOR2; (iii) reacting these halides with a metal halide, MX, to form the corresp. complexes M(R2AlX2) and M(RAlX3); and opt. (iv) reacting the complexes with RnAlX3-n (n = 1 or 2) to give asymmetric 1:2 complexes. ADVANTAGE - (I) are easily prepd. and of low m.pt. with the m.pts. of the various specific cpds. (I) being widely spread between room temp. and 220 deg.C so that a wide range of heat storage systems are obtd. which have good heat regeneration.
