The exhaust gas of an I.C. engine (10) is treated, pref. catalytically, by a preconverter (16), for coldstarting and a permanently connected main converter (14). The exhaust gas passes directly to the main converter when the gas temp. is high enough for effective main converter operation. Pref. the preconverter is connected in parallel with a bypass (30) between the engine and main converter. ADVANTAGE - Eariler effective catalytic conversion of exhaust gases.
