(A)An ultrasonic shock wave sensor is provided with a dielectric (2) which has negligible piezoelectric properties and which is located at least partially between two electrodes (4), for converting acoustic shock wave signals into electrical signals. The dielectric pref consists of polystyrene or polymethyl methacrylate. (B) Also claimed is a lithotriptor with an ultrasonic shock wave sensor and either an acoustic lens or an elastic coupling membrane, the novelty being that the lens or the membrane acts as the dielectric body for the sensor. ADVANTAGE - The sensor is simple to mfr, is mechanically robust, has a long life and is esp suited to routine measurements in the focus region of a lithotriptor.
