New peptide(s) with immunological activity - used in treatment of acute or chronic infections, inflammatory processes and auto:immune diseases

The following optically active pyrrolidone derivs. are new: (-)-4-(3-benzyloxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-oxo-3-pyrrolidinecarboxylic acid methyl ester (Ia); (-)-4-(3-benzyloxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-pyrrolidone (IIIa); (-)-4-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-2-pyrrolidone (IIIb). Optical resolution of 4-aryl-2-oxo-3-pyrrolidinecarboxylate esters of formula (I) is effected by treatment with pancreatin in an aq. medium, followed by isolation of the resulting optically active carboxylic acid of formula (II) and/or the unconverted optically active ester of formula (I). In the formulae, X = O or a direct bond; R1 = 1-16C hydrocarbyl opt. substd. by OH, oxo and/or halogen and/or interrupted by N; R2 = 1-4C alkyl; R3 = 1-6C alkyl. Also claimed is the use of the optically active cpds. (I) and/or (II) for prodn of optically active 4-aryl-2-pyrrolidones of formula (III), where Z = XR1 or OH. USE - Cpds. (III) are useful as medicaments for treating neurological and psychic disorders (US4012495), topical antiinflammatory agents (WO8602268), vasodilators and hypotensives (EP8645) and psychotherapeutic agents (DE3823299). The (-)-isomers generally have higher activity than the (+)-isomers.
