Deviations from uniformity of the disc (4) in the axial direction are measured by an incremental feeler (6) wired to a carrier frequency measuring amplifier (13), digitiser (14) and electronic processor (18). The angle of rotation is transmitted (8) to a positional adjustor (16) with feedback from the controller (20) of the laser (12). An optical system (11) directs the laser beam (19) onto areas of the disc from which superfluous material is to be removed by the heat treatment for restoration of planarity. USE/ADVANTAGE - For e.g., circular saw blades. Irregularities are smoothed out automatically without intervention of tool operator.
