In a process for producing diffusion-blocking layers of low hydrocarbon permeability, hydrolysable silanes and optionally other oxidic components are partially hydrolytically condensed and, either as such or following further condensation, applied to a substrate and cured. Containers for liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons preferably have a diffusion-blocking layer thus produced on the inner surface.
