The electric motor (7) is connected to a redn. gear box (8) and is arranged in the flat housing (5), with its longitudinal axis lying approximately in a plane parallel to the top side (4) of the housing (5), and laterally near to the drive mechanism (6), so that the structural height of the housing (5) i determined essentially by the height of the driving mechanism. The electric motor (1) is a 12 volt DC motor and the gear unit (8) has a redn. gear ratio of 100-500. An electronic assembly (31) can be mounted in the housing (5) esp. on the side lying opposite to the motor. A humidity sensor and/or non-contact or contact operable penetration are fitted at matching places at the motor vehicle and visible or non-visible lights arranged to form a light barrier, so that a warning can be activated in the event of inclement weather or the roof opening can be closed automatically. ADVANTAGE - Lifting or general driving unit which fulfils all safety requirements.
