Liq. polyiodide which is a liq. reaction prod. of a monomeric polyfunctionally substd. ammonium- or sulphonium iodide or likewise an equimolar mixt. of a monomeric polyfunctinally substd. amine- or thioether cpd. and an iodohydrocarbon, or the thioether cpd. only with solid iodine in a mol. ratio of iodine to monomeric polyfunctionally substd. cpd. of 1:1 to 50:1. The ammonium diodide is pref. a quat ammonium iodide of an aminooligooxaalkane of formula (I). (R1R2R4NCH2(CH2OCH2)nCH2R3)(+)I(-) (I) or a quat. ammonium iodide of an aminoalkanol of formula (II). (R1R2R4NCR5R6(CH2)nCHOH-R3)(+)I(-) (II) or a quat. ammonium iodide of an aminoacid deriv. of formula (III). (R1R2R4NCR5R6(CH2)nCOX)(+)I(-) (III) or an N-alkylurotropinium monoiodide of formula (IV). USE/ADVANTAGE - The prods. are made by a simple process from easily available raw materials, and have a high iodine content and good electrical conductivity. They are useful as conductive cathode materials for light metal-iodine batteries such as lithium-iodine batteries.
