The process is esp. for cooling of steel heated by rolling. There is a relative movement between the surface of the steel blank and the active area of the coolant used. The surface of the steel blank (1) is brought into flat contact with ice blocks (2, 2`) which are in thermal balance with melting water. The ice is applied on two parallel rolled surfaces. There are elements to press the ice onto the steel with adjustable pressure, so that the contact pressures on both sides are the same.
