Identification device for overboard ship passenger - uses automatically released signalling balloon with tethering line acting as electrical supply lead

The device is used to facilitate rescue in poor weather conditions and uses a signallying balloon (1) which is filled with a gas which is lighter than air, attached to the casualty via a (3). The balloon (1) is released upon contact of a life jacket capsule (2) with water and the line (3) can act as an electrical supply lead for a signal light (4) or radio signalling antenna carried by the balloon (1). Pref. the surface of the balloon has a grid of metal strips (5) and intermediate fluorescent zones (6), for aiding radar and visual detection. ADVANTAGE - Facilitates rapid location in rough weather.
