Optical coupler for planar, integrated optical fibre waveguides - uses waveguides with spatially allocated optical grids, with one used for optical wave lateral decoupling

The planar optical waveguides (W1,2) are integrated on different substrates (S1,2). The interconnectable waveguides have allocated spatial optical grids (G11,21;G12,22). One grid decouples the optical wave in a respective waveguide (W1) laterally from the same. The grid in the other waveguide (W2) is supplied with the decoupled wave. Pref. the interconnectable waveguides are mutually spaced in a micron order. Between the substrates may be fitted metal lugs (H). The decoupling grid is narrower than the associated coupling grid. USE/ADVANTAGE - For optical transmitter and receiver modules with narrow optical coupling and position tolerances.
