Hydrolysis-resistant poly:alkylene terephthalate prepn. - by reacting terephthalic acid or di:methyl terephthalate with aliphatic diol in melt in presence of stannous carboxylate as catalyst
The poly(alkylene terephthalates) (I) are prepd. by reacting terephthalic acid and/or dimethyl terephthalate with aliphatic diol in melt with exclusion of O2 and in presence of stannous: carboxylate (II) at 50-1000 ppm, calculated as Sn on wt. of reactants. (II) is pref. stannous acetate, oxalate, butyrate, octanoate, or dodecandioate. 100-700 ppm (II) calculated as Sn is used. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prepn. of shaped articles by injection moulding or extrusion, also fibres, films, coating agent (as powder, e.g., by whirl sintering, or from liq. dispersion or soln.). (I) have improved resistance to hydrolysis by hot water or steam.
