Raw preforms contg. additives, eg., binder, which become liq. during heating up are fired in a gas-tight chamber where they are surrounded with hot gas. The furnace has preheat chamber (2) in which hot gas supply and exhaust lines (65,66,62,68,69) are provided. This chamber contains a heating area (191) for the raw preforms (12-21) which has underneath it a drip catchment area and container(s) (210) for the material which oozes from the preforms. This container pref. has the shape of a drawer which can be replaced from the outside of the chamber. Also claimed is drain(s) in the bottom of the chamber, which can be closed off, leading out from the chamber. USE/ADVANTAGE - Preheat chamber can drain off most of the liq. material, preventing it contaminating the firing furnace and preventing it being vented to outside and causing environmental pollution. The procedure is used for the mfr. of graphite electrodes from a mixt. of coke and pitch.
