A process for the cooling of CO rich synthesis gasses uses a previously cooled gas stream for mixing and heat exchange with the hot gas stream. Gas leaving the system passes to a heat exchanger. After the heat exchanger part of the gas stream only leaves the system, the remainder is pref. returned to cool gas leaving the synthesis gas producer. Hot gas from a synthesis gas producer (1) is fed by a line (2) into a compartment (3) of the mixing chamber (4). Cool gas from the heat exchanger (12) is fed by line (7) into a chamber (8) of the mixing chamber (4). Mixed hot and cool gases exit from the compartment (6) of the mixing chamber (4) and pass through the heat exchanger (12) to exit from the system by line (13). Within the mixing chamber (4) two perforated plates (5) and (10) form barriers through which the opposing gas streams flow. The perforations in the plates (5) and (10) may be round or slit shaped. The perforations in each plate are offset from each other. USE/ADVANTAGE - Gasification of solid fuels. Energy savings.
