Water-soluble, crosslinkable polyamines (I) contain units of formula (IIA) and possibly units of formula (IIB) and (IIC) (where X = 1-18C aliphatic, 5-14C cycloaliphatic, 6-20C aromatic or 7-20C araliphatic residue; R = 1-18C alkyl, 5-14C cycloalkyl, 6-20C aryl or 7-16C aralkyl; n = 1-3). (I) are produced by reaction of polyamines contg. prim. or sec. amino gps. with isocyanate-sulphonates of formula OCN-X-(CH2)n-OSO2R (III), opt. mixed with other polyfunctional crosslinkers, e.g. epichlorohydrin. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used for treating paper, pref. for wet strength finishing. Solns. of (I) are stable for 6-9 months; they can be completely free from organic halogen and produce excellent improvement in the wet strength of treated paper.
