The emergency cut-out device provides a non-combustible gas which is supplied to the suction space of the fuel injection pump (2) for the engine (1), for preventing normal combustion. The gas may be air, which is contained within a replaceable gas cartridge (8), coupled to the fuel injection pump (2) via a line (7) containing a valve (9), operated via a control device (10), in dependence on a monitored engine operating parameter. The valve (9) may be operated pneumatically, electrically, hydraulically, or mechanically. ADVANTAGE - Rapid emergency cut-out without damage to engine.
