Waste container for radioactive material is stored in a borehole of a geological salt formation by lowering the container into the borehole and surrounding it with salt chippings to form a flame barrier to the transmission of local explosions. The salt chippings can be applied as a coating to the container before it is put in the borehole. ADVANTAGE - H explosions are confined as far as possible.
