Readily volatile components are stripped from a liq. sprayed (19) into the head of a column by a stream of gas from a base inlet (24) drawn upwards by a pump (20). The column consists of two or more frusto-conical sections (10,11,12) with a half-cone angle of 8 deg.; the liq. is injected into the uppermost section. Back section is joined to the section below by a pair of annular flanges (14) of equal dia. Films of liq. descending the inner wall of each section fall from the lower edge of the combined pair of flanges as a succession of individual drops. ADVANTAGE - Formation of a descending film into individual droplets increases total liq. surface contacted by rising gas, and improves all-over stripper efficiency.
