An ignition monitoring system for an engine monitors the actual engine speed during the firing cycle of each cylinder. The square of the engine speed is proportional to the cylinder energy and is used to determine the effectiveness of each cylinder. The measured square of the speed is subtracted from the mean square value to determine fluctuations in each cylinder. If the system detects misfiring, and if the rate of misfiring is above a threshold, a failure indication is activated, and/or the respective cylinder has its fuel supply cut.
