Decontaminating soil contg. mineral oil hydrocarbon - by three-stage biological degradation of contaminants under non-aerobic and aerobic conditions

Process for decontaminating soil contg. small amts. of mineral oil hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons and other biodegradable contaminants under non-aerobic and then aerobic conditions. Firstly, the initial feed is aerated with a stream of air, displacing most of the volatile contaminants; the soil is then treated with an anaerobic microorganism, in the presence of nutrients and a methane atmosphere, displacing residual chlorocarbons in a stream of methane; and then further biodegradation with an aerobic microorganism in the presence of suitable nutrients and a stream of air. USE - The process facilitates the desorption of soils for recycling.
