In a boiling water reactor, a secondary flow channel is formed inside the jacket of a fuel element by four fuel rods parallel to the jacket walls. At least two, preferably four blades, tapered in the direction of flow of the coolant and bent in such a way that they generate a swirl in the vertical coolant flow, are arranged in the secondary flow channels. It is thus possible to obtain a relatively high output from the fuel element.
