The cigarette making machine is supplied with tobacco at a constant rate by of a second machine with a container (1) for the tobacco. The tobacco (4) in this container is held at a constant level by a photo-electric cell (6) which opens a flap in the chute (3) when the level falls below that of the photo-electric cell. The tobacco is released from the container at a controlled rate by rotors (7,13) with intermeshing blades. The rotational speed of the rotor (7) is controlled by a second photo-electric cell and a control device (12) so that the tobacco is maintained at a constant level in the container (8) from which it is removed by a conveyor (18).
