The spectral width reduction system is used for the stimulation spectral lines of electrically charged gas particules which are electrodynamically held in an ion trap. The spectral stimulation is provided by a laser of variable frequency. The intensity of the dispersed light is a function of the stimulation frequency and is monitored by a detector. The stimulation of the electrically charged gas particles by the laser is effected over a short time interval, during which the voltage applied to the ion trap is held at its max. The detector has frequency - selective elements for measuring only the dispersed light within selected frequency slots. USE - For measuring closely packed spectral lines.
