The coupling network of a telephone system has terminal connector units (TSU) that connect with the exchange units (SW1-SW3). Each terminal has a number of time connectors (TS) and coupling network elements (AS1-AS4) that connect with units (PS) in the exchange system. The coupling elements (AS,PS) can be in the form of 128x128 matrix modules. The coupling elements (PS) have fault signalling lines that connect with the 'n' inputs of a 1 out of n detector module. The single output of the module is coupled to all coupling stage by and gates, that have the fault signal as the other input. ADVANTAGE - Allows rapid response to fault to effect changeover to maintain operation.
