New terpolymers (I) are prepd. by polymerising mixts. of 5-40 (wt)% vinyl- or alpha-methyl-vinyl-arene(s) (II) CH2=CR1-R2-(R3)a 20-70% bisphenol epoxide di(meth)acrylate(s) of formula (III) and 20-79% 3a,4,7,7a-tetra- or 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7-methanoinden-5(6)-yl(methyl) (ether) (meth)acrylate(s) of formula (IV). M = -(C(R6)(R7)-, -SO2-, -S-, -O- or a single bond; X = H, Me or Cl; A = -(CHR8-CHR9-O)- or -(CH2-CH(OH)-CH2-O)-; Q = a single bond or -CH2-; Z = a single or double bond; Y = -CH(OH)-or a single bond; R1,R4,R5,R8,R9,R10,R11 and R12 independently = H or Me; R2 = phenyl, naphthyl or anthracyl; R3 = H, Me, Et, Pr or t-Bu; R6 and R7 = H, Me, Et, cyclohexyl or phenyl; a = 0-5; b = 1, 2 or 3; c = 1-5; d, e and g = 0, 1, 2 or 3; f = 0-4; in the presence of polymerisation initiator(s), accelerator(s), opt. additional accelerator(s), opt. a coinitiator for radiation cure and opt. inhibitor(s). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are claimed for making mouldings. They are thermosetting transparent plastics with high impact strength and a refractive index, nD, greater than 1.56 in conjunction with an Abbe no., gammaD, of at least 37. They are useful for making lightweight optical components, e.g. opto-electronic devices, data stores, waveguides, lenses for optical devices and equipment and esp. spherical and aspherical ocular correction lenses.
