The peripheral seal closes an axial gap (3) between two relatively moving parts (2a, 2b). It consists of a grooved (7) support ring (5) on the one component (2a), and at least one peripheral sealing lip (11a) fitting into the axial gap (3). The groove (7) contains a number of ceramic spacer-balls (8) supported by a ring (9a) on the second component (2b). Between the sealing lip (11a) on the one side and the ring (9a) or second component (2b) on the other side is a shallow sealing gap. USE/ADVANTAGE - The peripheral seal gives little friction between the relatively moving components, and minimises leakage losses.
