Combined lathe and milling machine - roughs out keyway with back tapered end-mill and finishes sides by traversing with work slightly rotated
Combined lathe and milling machine - roughs out keyway with back tapered end-mill and finishes sides by traversing with work slightly rotated
The machine has a headstock and chuck (2) and tailstock (4,5) between which the workpiece (3) can be supported and driven. On top of the tailstock is a milling head (6) carried on a horizontal slide allowing the milling cutter, an end mill (7), to be traversed along the work. For slot milling the end mill is slightly conical, reducing in diameter from the end. To mill a slot, eg a keyway, the end mill is first plunged into the work to the required depth and the slide traversed to rough out the slot. The two sides are then successively milled with the workpiece rotated through a small angle corresponding to the cone angle of the cutter. USE/ADVANTAGE - Parallel sided, straight and accurate slot produced without the need to change cutters.
