In breaking down poly-halogenated hydrocarbons cpds. deposited on an adsorbent contg. activated C, by heating and catalytic treatment, when deposited Hg is also present, the adsorbent is heated, in a deficiency of O2, to a temp. for desorption of the Hg, and after breakdown of the polyhalogenated hydrocarbons and dust sepn. at a temp. not causing condensn. of Hg, the gases contg. desorbed Hg are fed to a condenser, to condense out the Hg. USE - Adsorbents contg. activated C are strong adsorbents for harmful organic substances, e.g. polychlorinated dibenzodioxines, dibenzofurans or biphenyls, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and also adsorb Hg, esp. in flue gases in waste combustion plant.
