Producing multicoloured reflecting interference colours on plastic films is claimed. The coating consists of a reflective metal layer vaporised onto a plastic film, a transparent varnish layer which is printed on and a translucent metal layer. Transparent varnish thickness is varied locally from 120-2000 nm to achieve the required multi-colour effects. Coatings can be applied to one or both sides of the plastic film. USE/ADVANTAGE - For continuous or semi-continuous prodn. of interference filters. Known technology e.g. offset printing, is used to apply the variable thickness varnish coating.
