New di:hydro-methanobenzocyclooctaquinoline cpds. and azo dyestuff cpd - their prepn. and use as azoic coupler and for dyeing esp. wool and polyamide

New azo dyestuffs are 12-azo-2,2,5,7,7-pentamethyl -2,3-dihydro-5,8'-methano benzo(1,2,3-mn)-cycloocta (b)-quinoline cpds. (I); and new 9-alkyl- and 9-benzyl-2,2,5,7,7-pentamethyl -2,3-dihydro-5,8'-methano-benzo (1,2,3-mn) -cycloocta (b)-quinoline cpds. (II) are of the formulae: (I) and (II). In (I) D = a diazo component; R1 = H, halogen or a (b (substd.) 1-8C alkyl, 1-8C alkoxy, 2-8C alkanoylamino of phenoxy gp.; R2 = a (susbtd.) 1-8C alkyl or benzyl gp. or, in (I) only, R2 may also = H; (I) contains at least one sulpho or (thio)sulphato gp. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are claimed for use in dyeing and printing. They are esp. useful for dyeing (textile) fibres contg. N or OH gps., e.g. cellulose, silk and esp. wool and synthetic polyamide fibres, yarns, woven and knitted fabrics, giving level red and blue tones with good fastness. (II) are intermediates for (I).
