The rotating boring bar consists of a nose section (10) and a shank section (16) linked by a connecting piece (12) and partly enveloped by and adjusting sleeve (18). The nose end is recessed for a tooltip (22) clamped to a slide (20) which provides coarse diametral adjustment. The linked ends of the nose and shank sections are of reduced dia. (28, 30) and have cross-slots which engage with cross-ribs (40, 42) disposed at 90 deg. on the connecting piece (12). The connection thus formed is torsionally rigid but permits relative lateral movement of the two sections. The adjusting sleeve (18) has bores (32) and (34) which are a close fit on the reduced ends (28) and (30) but are slightly eccentric to each other. In consequence when the sleeve is rotated on the boring bar the radial position of the tooltip is very precisely adjusted. A tension rod (14) passing through the centre of the boring bar holds the two parts firmly together. USE/ADVANTAGE - Compact, rigid design of boring bar permits fine boring of small holes.
