(A) Adsorptive sepn. is carried out with a flat micro-porous adsorbent which is transported relative to the medium to be sepd., the novelty being that the medium flows through the adsorbent. (B) In adsorptive sepn appts. esp for carrying out process (A), the adsorbent is in the form of a strip which is conveyed over drums while the medium to be sepd is fed by gravity or pressure through the adsorbent. USE/ADVANTAGE: The process is used esp. for adsorption from liq. phases by various (combined) mechanisms such as ionm exchange, hydrophobic interaction, chelate formation and specific interactions such as affinity, chromatography and immuno-complex formation, e.g. for reversible binding of certain enzymes (e.g. malate dehydrosenase) to dyes immobilised on a solid matrix and for heavy metal removal from waste waters. The process gives high sepn. efficiency since connective material transport occurs within the micropores resulting in accelerated adsorption and desorption compared with the diffusion-limited exchange kinetics of granular adsorbents.
