A product (I) is claimed, with (a) a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composite structure, (b) a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composite insert, at least part of which is fused with part of (a) so that part of (a) is thereby expanded, and (c) a coupling which is connected with (a) via the enlarged part. (I) is produced by positioning (c) round (a) near the end of (a), heating the end of (a) to at least soften it, and inserting (b) into the heated end of (a) so as to enlarge it and prevent the coupling coming off. Pref., (a) and (b) are of reinforced polyarylene sulphide (II), pref. PPS, and (b) is fused with one end of (a); (c) also contains (II)-composite and is connected with the enlarged end of (a); (I) also has a retaining device connected to (c), to keep it close to the enlarged end of (a); (I) is a pump rod of PPS composite, comprising reinforcing fibres in a PPS matrix. USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention provides coupled structures of fibre-reinforced PPS, esp. pump rods for use in the oil and gas industry, which have adequate mechanical strength but are lighter and more chemically-resistant than corresp. metal structures.
