Gear pinions (2, 3) mounted on a spindle (1) are lubricated through a hole (23) down the centre of the spindle by a radial piston pump also incorporated in the spindle. Fitted into a radial hole (6) in the spindle is a piston (7) with a spring (8) retained inside by the body (11) of a check valve with a ball (20) seated in its outlet opening. Holes (17) in the side of the piston and below the level (18) of oil in a sump, allow oil to enter the interior (19). - The base (7A) of the piston rests on an eccentric ring (16) so that it is reciprocated when the spindle rotates and oil is forced into a channel (22) sloping downwards through the spindle, and then into the central lubricating hole (23).
