Microscopic imaging and image evaluation by means of optical microscopy is used for in-situ analysis of a biological culture (4) in motion or at rest. The moving or stationary culture (4) in a biological reactor (1) is analysed with the help of a microscope (2) and a video-camera (51). The microscopic image formed by the video-camera (51) is processed by a computerised digital imaging system (52), which measures the cell concentration in the culture (4) as well as other parameters, and is used immediately for control of the biological process in the reactor (1). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for characterising biological cultures, esp cultures which are contained in a reactor vessel. It is applicable for example where the rate of multiplication of cells or the rate of increase of biomass is to be monitored and controlled. The proposed system allows cell concn to be measured directly,, and therefore with greater accuracy.
