The apparatus case (1) contains a fixed (glued) support section (5) and a free support section (6) which are joined by two lengths of rod (3.4) that have a low coefficient of expansion. A thermal strip (2) of a high coefficient of expansion, passes through slots in both support sections (5.6) and is attached (glued) to the fixed section (5). The thermal strip (2) is tensioned by elastic guide wires (10.12) which ensure an unrestricted expansion and contraction process. An integral part of the free support section (6) is a reference scale (7) which lies parallel to the thermal strip (2) and an electronic read head (8) that indicates the change in length of the thermal strip (2). USE/ADVANTAGE - Thermal expansion readings are converted into corresponding algorithmic values which are used for automatic temperature compensation in industrial length sensing equipment.
