A control mechanism 26 for a multipole switch with sleeve-shaped contact-holder bar includes a bell crank 68 with abrupt dead centre transition under the action of a spring 88 and of an operating lever 28, a transmission lever 78 with curvilinear slot 80 in which the articulation pin 74 of the bell crank 68 moves, and a rotary drum 92 equipped with a safety tag 100 able to cooperate with a lug 102 of the transmission lever 78 to form a direct auxiliary mechanical link between the bar and the operating handle 28, following blockage of the bar after exceeding the dead centre of opening of the bell crank.
