A description is given of new diamines containing 2,1-isobenzoxazole groups corresponding to the general formula I: IMAGE in which X represents a divalent atom or group and Ar represents a divalent aromatic group. They can be prepared by reacting an aromatic nitro derivative with an arylacetonitrile containing a protected amine functional group. These diamines can be used to prepare polyimides by condensation with tetracarboxylic acid derivatives (for example dianhydrides or diesters/diacids); these polyimides have, after heating at 250-300 DEG C, an increased glass transition temperature.
