This device is employed in the conventional fore-carriages of machines for harvesting corn (maize) and it is located below pairs of harvesting cylinders. It includes a rotor 6 provided with cutters (knives) 5 on its lateral surface, these cutters (knives) passing between those which are provided on a support 3 close to the ground. The support 3 protects the rotor 6 against impacts, and at the same time it prevents the ears which have fallen on the ground from becoming damaged.
