The invention relates to a method for the immobilisation and the volume reduction of low-level radioactive waste produced by rare earth recovery methods. According to the invention, the method consists in forming a mixture of dried radioactive waste residues and a fluxing agent, in melting the mixture at a temperature lying in the range from 1200 DEG to 1800 DEG C to form molten glass and in pouring the molten glass into suitable containers. The present invention applies especially in the case of waste containing thorium and/or uranium.
