P Methylsilicone resins are pyrolysed in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to form a translucent glass comprising silicon, oxygen and carbon, in which the silicon atoms are chemically bonded to the carbon and oxygen atoms without there are practically chemical bonds between the atoms of carbon and oxygen; the translucent silicon-oxy-carbide glasses of the invention resist devitrification and decomposition in oxidizing or reducing atmospheres at temperatures of about 1250 degrees C or higher; methods for forming silicon-oxy-carbide glass articles are described as well as specific methods for forming fibers and composites containing silicon-oxy-carbide glass. /P
